The Carolina Panthers will use the bye week to determine who will start at QB

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by dawgpounded on Thursday 18 October 2007 at 10:16 pm

It will be interesting to see how quick David Carr’s back heals after he watched the ancient Vinny Testaverde lead the team to a big victory last week over the Cardinals in Arizona.  Carr has completed 32 of 62 passes (51.6%) for 330 yards with 2 TD passes and 2 INTs (64.6 QB Rating) so far this season.  He has been holding the ball way too long as evidenced by the 5 sacks he’s already taken this season.  Vinny Testaverde was somewhat sharp in his first game as he completed 20 of 33 passes (60.6%) for 206 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs (88.7 QB Rating).  His TD pass was a bomb to Steve Smith which showed off his arm strength.  I would think the Panthers would start Carr against the Colts when they return from the bye week but I think he will have a short leash with Testaverde waiting in the wings.

Carolina Panthers 25, Arizona Cardinals 10

Things were not looking good for the Panthers heading into the 4th quarter as they trailed the Cardinals 10-9.  But the Cardinals exploded in the 4th quarter and it was amazingly Vinny Testaverde who got it all started with a 65-yard TD strike to Steve Smith.  John Kasay added a FG and DeAngelo Williams had a nice TD run to seal the deal.  Testaverde came to the Panthers on Monday and he started today!  He looked pretty good for an old man as he completed 20 of 33 passes for 206 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 INTs.  DeAngelo Williams was the star of the running game as he carried the ball 10 times for 121 yards (12.1 ypc) with a TD.  DeShaun Foster had a hard time finding running room as he carried the ball 17 times for 43 yards (2.5 ypc).  Steve Smith was a force today as he caught 10 passes for 136 yards (13.6 avg) with a TD grab.  The Panthers finished up with 181 yards rushing on 30 carries (6.0 ypc) and they also completed 20 of 33 passes for 193 yards.

The defense played their best all-around game of the season.  Rookie linebacker Jon Beason led the Panthers in tackles with 9.  But it was DE Julius Peppers (7 tackles, 1.5 sacks, fumble recovery) and safety Deke Cooper (6 tackles, 2 interceptions) who were making the game altering plays.  The Cardinals finished up with 98 yards rushing on 26 carries (3.8 ypc) and they also completed 14 of 26 passes for 159 yards.

Carolina Panthers vs. Arizona Cardinals

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup by dawgpounded on Friday 12 October 2007 at 7:12 am
This will be a battle of backup QBs in the desert as Kurt Warner will start for the Cardinals and either David Carr or Vinny Testaverde will start for the Panthers.  You can easily tell who has the edge in that matchup.  The Carolina Panthers are 3-2 overall but they are 3-0 on the road this season.  They have outscored their opponents 70-46 in those road games.  The Cardinals are also 3-2 on the season and they are 2-0 at home this season.  So as boxing announcer Michael Buffer likes to say…..”Someone’s O must go!”

David Carr has a bad back and he needed a shot at halftime last week to finish the game.  If he can’t go Vinny Testaverde will start and he’s only been with the Panthers since Monday.  Look for the Panthers to run the ball often this weekend with DeShaun Foster (361 yards rushing, 4.5 ypc) and DeAngelo Williams (168 yards rushing, 3.9 yards per carry) against a Cardinals defense that is allowing 101.0 yards rushing and 4.0 yards per carry so far this season.  Look for the Cardinals to try to double Steve Smith (25 rec, 360 yards, 5 TDs) and make the Panthers throw to someone else to beat them.

Kurt Warner looks like a new man behind the center.  He has a 102.3 QB Rating so far this season and he should have an outstanding day throwing the ball as the Panthers are giving up 233.6 yards passing per game this season.  The Cards do need to double Julius Peppers as he’s one of the most dangerous DEs in the NFL.  Don’t think for a minute that the Cards won’t run the ball often as Edgerrin James (442 yards rushing, 4.1 ypc, 3 TD runs) should have success on the ground against a Panthers defense that is allowing 3.9 yards per carry and 112.8 yards rushing per game.

PREDICTION:  The Cardinals appear to be a team on the rise and I just can’t see David Carr or Vinny Testaverde leading the Panthers to victory in this game.

The Carolina Panthers sign Vinny Testaverde

Blogged under Big Panther News,Bloglockers,Free Agent Additions,Front Page by dawgpounded on Wednesday 10 October 2007 at 8:18 am

With Jake Delhomme out for the season and David Carr struggling with a bad back, the Panthers have decided to sign 43-year old QB Vinny Testaverde as an insurance policy.  Testaverde completed 2 of 3 passes last season for the Patriots for 29 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 interceptions.  Testaverde has now completed 3,693 of 6,529 (56.6%) passes in his NFL career for 45,281 yards (#6 all-time) with 270 TD passes (#9 all-time) and 261 interceptions (75.2 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 421 times for 1,639 yards (3.9 ypc) with 15 TD runs.

The Carolina Panthers lose QB Jake Delhomme for the rest of the season

Blogged under Big Panther News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by dawgpounded on Tuesday 9 October 2007 at 11:19 am

The Panthers will be without Jake Delhomme for the remainder of the season after he underwent serious right elbow surgery.  This is a huge blow to the Panthers as Delhomme was playing at a Pro Bowl level this season.  He completed 55 of 86 passes (64%) for 626 yards with 8 TD passes and 1 interception (111.9 QB Rating).  He also carried the football 6 times for 26 yards (4.3 ypc).  It will be now up to David Carr to keep the offense running at a high level if he has what it takes.  He has not played too well yet this season for the Panthers.  He has completed 32 of 62 passes (51.6%) for 330 yards with 2 TD passes and 2 interceptions (64.6 QB Rating) and he also carried the football 9 times for 33 yards (3.7 ypc).  If Carr’s back acts up like it did last week the Panthers will have no choice but to turn to undrafted rookie Matt Moore who has completed 1 of 2 passes for 43 yards this season.  Look for the Panthers to run the ball more with Carr at QB.

Carolina Panthers 16, New Orleans Saints 13

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps by dawgpounded on Monday 8 October 2007 at 3:25 pm

The Saints gave this football game to the Panthers.  The Panthers played horrible on offense for the first three quarters before rallying for 10 points in the 4th quarter to pull out a victory.  David Carr completed 10 of 17 passes for 119 yards with 1 TD and 1 interception in this football game and he looked bad doing it.  He left the game for a few plays because of his injured back and undrafted rookie QB Matt Moore completed 1 of 2 passes for 43 yards.  DeShaun Foster did the heavy lifting in the running game as he carried the ball 19 times for 59 yards (3.1 ypc).  DeAngelo Williams pitched in with 7 carries for 23 yards (3.4 ypc).  WR Keary Colbert had his best game of the season as he caught 4 passes for 74 yards (18.5 avg) and Steve Smith added 4 catches for 47 yards (11.8 avg) with a TD.  The Panthers finished up with 88 yards on 28 carries (3.1 ypc) and they completed 11 of 19 passes for 155 yards.

The defense was in bend but don’t break mode and they were led by rookie linebacker Jon Beason who made 13 tackles.  The Panthers held the Saints to 89 yards rushing on 28 carries (3.2 ypc) but the Saints did complete 29 of 47 passes for 252 yards.

The Carolina Panthers will be without Nick Goings this week

Blogged under Big Panther News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by dawgpounded on Friday 5 October 2007 at 9:22 pm

Nick Goings will miss this week as he is still recovering from a concussion.  He was returning kickoffs for the Panthers this season.  He returned 9 kickoffs for 174 yards (19.3 avg) so far this season and he didn’t get a chance to carry the football on offense yet this year.  Rookie Ryne Robinson will replace Goings and he has returned 4 kickoffs for 81 yards (20.3 avg).  Ryne Robinson has also returned 7 punts for 51 yards (7.3 avg) so far this season.

Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints

The Saints have been a mess all season long as they are 0-3 having been outscored 103-38!  The Panthers have been like two different teams this season as they are awful at home going 0-2.  But, on the road the Panthers are 2-0 having outscored their opponents 54-33!

The Saints have been lost this season on offense and things have gotten a lot tougher with Deuce McAllister going down for the season.  The Saints are planning on using Reggie Bush (80 yards rushing, 2.8 ypc) as the main man in the running game.  At least, that’s what they are saying in public but I have a feeling that undrafted rookie Pierre Thomas will get a big chance to show what he can do soon as Bush can’t handle running between the tackles.  Teams have rushed for 118.0 yards per game against the Panthers so look for the Saints to try to run a balanced offense this week.  Drew Brees (677 yards passing, 1 TD pass, 7 interceptions) needs to be more careful with the football and this week he could have some success as the Panthers don’t have any pickoffs yet this season.  Look for Marques Colston and TE Eric Johnson to have big games this week.

It looks as if David Carr is going to start again this weekend so look for the Panthers to attempt to run the football often.  The Saints are allowing 116.3 yards rushing per game but only 3.7 ypc so DeShaun Foster (302 yards rushing, 5.0 ypc) and DeAngelo Williams (145 yards rushing, 4.0 ypc) will likely have to fight for every yard they get.  The Saints pass defense has been awful this season as they are allowing 239.0 yards passing per game and they have also allowed 7 TD passes and only have 1 interception.  The Saints also don’t have a sack yet this season so David Carr will likely have a lot more time to throw the football this week.  Look for Steve Smith to have a monster game this week (21 rec, 313 yards, 4 TDs).

PREDICTION:  The Saints are lost right now and I don’t see how a bye week will cure all of their ills.  The Panthers will win this game in the Super Dome as the Saints look forward to next April’s Draft.

WHY!?!?!?!?!?

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page by baadluck13 on Thursday 4 October 2007 at 8:15 pm

Why did the panthers pass on Brady Quinn, Lindell White(they want a power run game!) Hey coach I got an idea.  Move DeAngelo out to reciever since it seems he gets more positive yardage on screen passes.  Split the carries equally between Foster and Hoover.  You want a power running back?  Look no further!  He is right under your nose Hoooooooooover.  He gets you 3 every time he touches the ball!  Might can get you 6 with the zone blocking.  Coach you used him alot last year against the rams, it worked. You never went back to letting him have the touches? Defense hmmm let me see.  Umm you don’t have a middle line backer?  MOVE Peppers to middle line backer!  You have the best defensive line in the entire league!!!  It would be much easier for Pep to shut down/assist left side line from the middle back than to drop back and aid the defensive backs. It seems to me that your back up line is solid.  You got no strength at defensive back?! An added bonus,  if Peppers is not 100% due to weight loss, illness or because he has been held, beat on, triple teamed, chopped block, or any of the other nasty things he has had to smile about over the years never getting a flag, it would free him up to make bigger plays.  I guess that is enough I don’t want to seem like I am trashing my beloved panthers.  Just some food for thought.

Surprise, surprise Dan Morgan is hurt again for the Carolina Panthers

Blogged under Big Panther News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports by dawgpounded on Tuesday 2 October 2007 at 6:28 pm

This is starting to sound like a broken record as Morgan always seems to be injured.  And that’s a shame as he is a very talented football player.  Morgan has a partially torn ACL so he will be out indefinately.  Morgan has 22 tackles so far this season.  James Anderson will replace Morgan in the middle and he has 10 tackles so far this season.
