John Fox should get a mulligan for his team’s 7-9 record this season as starting QB Jake Delhomme went down early in the year and the Panthers never recovered.  Fox has been the head coach of the Panthers for six seasons now and he has compiled a 51-45 (.531 %) record during the regular season.  He also has a 5-2 (.714 %) record in the post season.

Injuries hurt the QB of the Carolina Panthers this season

The Panthers started 4 different QBs this season and that’s usually a recipe for disaster.  Jake Delhomme was off to an outstanding start to the season before his ended with him needing Tommy John Surgery.  He played in 3 games for the Panthers this season and he completed 55 of 86 passes (64%) for 624 yards with 8 TD passes and 1 interception (111.8 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 6 times for 26 yards (4.3 ypc).  Delhomme has now played in 70 games in his NFL career and he completed 1,206 of 2,020 passes (59.7%) for 14,589 yards with 100 TD passes and 64 interceptions (85.2 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 130 times for 249 yards (1.9 ypc) with 5 TD runs.

David Carr was signed to a nice free agent contract last off season with the idea that he would be able to step in without much of a dropoff if Delhomme was injured.  Boy, were the Panthers wrong on this one.  Carr struggled with an injured back before he had to be shut down for the season.  Carr played in 6 games last season for the Panthers and he completed 73 of 136 passes (53.7%) for 635 yards with 3 TD passes and 5 interceptions (58.3 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 17 times for 59 yards (3.5 ypc).  Carr has now played in 82 games in his NFL career and he has completed 1,316 of 2,206 passes (59.7%) for 14,026 yards with 62 TD passes and 70 interceptions (74.4 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 285 times for 1,294 yards (4.5 ypc) with 8 TD runs.

The Panthers called up Vinny Testaverde and signed him to be a backup but he indeed had to start some games when Carr was shelved with a bad back……and he looked his age.  Testaverde played in 7 games last season for the Panthers and he completed 94 of 172 passes (54.7%) for 952 yards with 5 TD passes and 6 interceptions (65.8 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 9 times for 22 yards (2.4 ypc).  Testaverde has now played in 233 games in his NFL career and he has completed 3,787 of 6,701 passes (56.5%) for 46,233 yards with 275 TD passes and 267 interceptions (75.0 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 430 times for 1,661 yards (3.9 ypc) with 15 TD runs.

Undrafted rookie QB Matt Moore finished the season as the starting Panthers QB and he flashed some potential.  He played in 9 games for the Panthers this season and he completed 63 of 111 passes (56.8%) for 730 yards with 3 TD passes and 5 interceptions (67.0 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 3 times for 5 yards (1.7 ypc).
