The Carolina Panthers shocked me yesterday as they turned Cam Newton loose in the passing game.  He almost played well enough to lead his team to a victory,  But the defense and special teams folded up the tent in the 4th quarter.  The Cardinals’ kill shot was when rookie CB Patrick Peterson returned a punt 89 yards for a TD to end the scoring in this game.  Still, Cam Newton was remarkable.  He led the Panthers on a long drive at the end of the game and they fell just short of getting into the end zone to tie it.  Newton completed 24 of 37 passes for 422 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 INT.  He also carried the ball 8 times for 18 yards (2.3 ypc) with 1 TD run yesterday.  Newton set a new NFL record for passing yards in a QBs NFL debut!  DeAngelo Williams had a hard time finding running room against the Cardinals as he carried the ball 12 times for 30 yards (2.5 ypc).  Jonathan Stewart pitched in with 26 yards on 7 carries (3.7 ypc) and he also caught 2 passes for 14 yards (7.0 avg).  WR Steve Smith had a monster game for the Panthers yesterday with 8 grabs for 178 yards (22.3 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  TE Greg Olsen (4 rec, 78 yards), WR Brandon LaFell (4 rec, 70 yards) and TE Jeremy Shockey (3 rec, 51 yards) also pitched in for the Panthers in the passing game.  The Panthers finished up with 74 yards rushing on 27 carries (2.7 ypc) and they also completed 24 of 37 passes (64.9%) for 403 yards as they had possession of the ball for 32:47.

The defense didn’t play too well for the Panthers yesterday.  LB Thomas Davis led the way for the Panthers in this game with 7 tackles and 1 fumble recovery.  DEs Greg Hardy (5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pass defensed and 1 QB hit) and Charles Johnson (4 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 1 sack and 1 QB hit) also had nice games for the Panthers.  The Cardinals rushed for 99 yards on 25 carries (4.0 ypc) and they completed 18 of 27 passes (66.7%) for 295 yards.  The Panthers start out the 2011 season with a 0-1 record.
