Despite the close score the Panthers were pushed around on Saturday Night.  Jake Delhomme started this game and he completed 11 of 16 passes for 180 yards.  Josh McCown finished up the game by completing 2 of 4 passes for 40 yards.  Mike Goodson led the way on the ground in this game for the Panthers with 52 yards on 11 carries (4.7 ypc) and he also caught 3 passes for 26 yards (8.7 avg).  Decori Birmingham also was busy in this game with 27 yards rushing on 8 carries (3.4 ypc) with 1 TD run.  Mushin Muhammad was the leading receiver in this game for the Panthers with 51 yards on 2 catches (25.5 avg).  The Panthers finished up with 281 yards of offense in this game (78 rushing, 203 passing) despite only having possession of the ball for 24:51.

LB James Anderson led a bend but don’t break effort by the Panthers’ defense with 8 tackles.  The Ravens finished up with a stunning 421 yards of offense in this game (118 rushing, 303 passing).

Miami Dolphins 27, Carolina Panthers 17

The Panthers looked like they didn’t want to play this game last Saturday Night.  Jake Delhomme started the game at QB and he completed 5 of 7 passes for 47 yards.  Matt Moore was not that effective in this game either completing 4 of 9 passes for 41 yards.  Josh McCown looked the best of the QBs in this game for the Panthers and that is not saying much as he completed 7 of 12 passes for 61 yards.  DeAngelo Williams led the way for the Panthers on the ground with 40 yards rushing on 8 carries (5.0 ypc) including a TD run.  Decori Birmingham also was busy in this game with 26 yards rushing on 7 carries (3.7 ypc) with a TD run.  He also caught 3 passes for 9 yards in this game.  TE Dante Rosario led the way in the passing game for the Panthers with 54 yards on 3 catches (18.0 avg).  The Panthers only finished up with 244 total yards of offense in this game (98 rushing, 146 passing) and that just won’t get it done.

Linebacker James Anderson led the way for the Panthers’ defense with 10 tackles.  The Panthers did not play well on defense allowing 321 total yards to the Dolphins (141 rushing, 180 passing).  This is a game the Panthers want to forget.

New York Giants 24, Carolina Panthers 17

The Panthers slugged it out with the Giants on Monday Night before losing on the last play of the game.  Jake Delhomme made a brief appearance in this game completing 5 of 9 passes for 38 yards.  Josh McCown followed Delhomme in this game and he completed 3 of 6 passes for 26 yards with a pickoff.  Matt Moore was solid completing 4 of 7 passes for 43 yards.  Undrafted rookie QB Hunter Cantwell completed 4 of 8 passes for 64 yards with a TD pass.  He also carried the ball 1 time for 21 yards.  Mike Goodson led the way in the running game for the Panthers with 43 yards on 6 carries (7.2 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He also caught 2 passes for 16 yards.  WR Jason Chery was the leading receiver in this game for the Panthers with 35 yards on two grabs including a TD.  The Panthers finished this game with 276 total yards of offense (124 rushing, 152 passing).  They will need to improve on those numbers when the real games start if they want to win some games.

Linebacker Dan Connor led a solid effort for the Panthers with 9 tackles.  LBs Jeremy Leman and Mortty Ivy also pitched in with solid games as they each had 7 tackles.  The Giants finished up with 279 total yards on offense (139 rushing, 140 passing) in this game.

Pittsburgh Steelers 19, Carolina Panthers 16

The Panthers played mostly backups in this game but they still fought hard losing on a Jeff Reed field goal on the last play of the game.  Matt Moore got the start and he didn’t play well as he completed 15 of 27 passes for 164 yards with 2 interceptions.  Brett Basanez finished up the game completing 6 of 11 passes for 106 yards with a 29-yard TD pass.  Decori Birmingham led the Panthers in rushing in this game with 38 yards rushing on 9 carries (4.2 ypc) and he also caught 1 pass for 12 yards.  LaBrandon Toefield had a night to forget against the Steelers carrying the ball 13 times for 18 yards (1.4 ypc).  WR Domonique Thompson had another solid game for the Panthers catching 5 passes for 74 yards (14.8 avg).  Dwayne Jarrett also had a solid game with 6 grabs for 56 yards (9.3 avg).  The Panthers finished up with 62 yards rushing on 25 carries (2.5 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 38 passes for 261 yards in this game.

The Panthers had huge issues in this football game dealing with the Steelers’ running game.  Linebacker James Anderson led the way for the Panthers against the Steelers with 11 tackles.  Safety Nate Salley (9 tackles) and linebacker Dan Connor (8 tackles) both had solid games also.  The Steelers finished up this game with 178 yards on 44 carries (4.0 ypc) and they also completed 11 of 23 passes for 124 yards.  The Panthers finished the preseason 2-2 but they have to be happy with what they saw.

Carolina Panthers 47, Washington Redskins 3

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Pre-Season by admin on Thursday 28 August 2008 at 5:17 pm

The Carolina Panthers totally destroyed the Redskins last Saturday Night.  Jake Delhomme looked the best he has all preseason as he completed 11 of 19 passes for 159 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 interception.  Matt Moore finished up the game essentially handing off the football as he completed 2 of 5 passes for 33 yards.  DeAngelo Williams led the Panthers in rushing in this game with 101 yards on only 9 carries (11.2 ypc) with a 60-yard TD run.  Rookie Jonathan Stewart also had a very impressive game rushing for 100 yards on 10 carries (10.0 ypc) with a 50-yard TD run.  Steve Smith had a good game as he led the Panthers in receiving with 60 yards on 4 catches (15.0 avg) including a 33-yarder for a TD.  He also scored on a 8-yard fumble return for a TD.  TE Dante Rosario pitched in with 2 catches for 44 yards (22.0 avg) including a 24-yarder for a TD.  Dwayne Jarrett finally had a decent game in the NFL with 4 grabs for 40 yards (10.0 avg).  The Panthers rushed for 228 yards on 32 carries (7.1 ypc) and they also completed 13 of 24 passes for 174 yards.

The defense was also outstanding for the Panthers in this football game.  CB Richard Marshall led the way for the Panthers in this game with 9 tackles.  DE Julius Peppers had another outstanding game for the Panthers with 3 tackles, a sack and 2 fumble recoveries.  The Redskins finished up with only 79 yards rushing on 22 carries (3.6 ypc) and they also completed 21 of 37 passes for 129 yards.  Too bad this game didn’t count because the Panthers looked like the best team in the NFL this night.

A few scribbles in my notebook about the Carolina Panthers so far this preseason

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Pre-Season by admin on Saturday 16 August 2008 at 5:27 pm

It’s nice to see Jake Delhomme back in action even if his numbers don’t look good because this guy is a winner.  Delhomme has only completed 9 of 15 passes (60%) for 54 yards with 0 TDs and 1 interception (39.3 QB Rating).  I wouldn’t be too concerned about his numbers in August as long as he’s ready to rock in September.  Running back DeAngelo Williams looks like he was insulted that the Panthers drafted Jonathan Stewart last April.  He has carried the ball 17 times for 87 yards (5.1 ypc) with 2 TD runs and he has also caught 2 passes for 13 yards (6.5 avg).  Williams clearly looks like the best running back on the Panthers right now and I always thought he was quite a bit underrated as a player.  25-year old running back DeCori Birmingham might not make the Panthers’ opening day roster but if he keeps playing like he is right now he will make some team.  Birmingham has carried the ball 18 times for 75 yards (4.2 ypc) and he has also caught 2 passes for 27 yards (13.5 avg).  25-year old WR Dominique Thompson has also made a decent impression on the Panthers as he has caught 7 passes for 57 yards (8.1 avg).  Thompson has only 1 catch for 13 yards in his NFL career so far.

Philadelphia Eagles 24, Carolina Panthers 13

The Panthers got blitzed 24-3 in the 4th quarter last night which will surely earn some players pink notices that were trying to make the team.  Jake Delhomme got his first real extended action since Tommy John Surgery last night and he passed his test completing 9 of 14 passes for 54 yards with a interception.  Matt Moore finished up the game completing 11 of 19 passes for 85 yards with a interception that was returned 74-yards for a TD by linebacker Justin Roland of the Eagles.  DeAngelo Williams had another solid game leading the Panthers with 32 yards rushing on 8 carries (4.0 ypc).  Nick Goings pitched in with 27 yards rushing on 7 carries (3.9 ypc).  Rookie Jonathan Stewart got his first action in his NFL career last night and he only carried the ball 4 times for 3 yards (0.8 ypc).  WR Dominique Thompson led the way for the Panthers last night with 2 grabs for 40 yards (20.0 avg).  The Panthers finished up with only 78 yards rushing on 27 carries (2.9 ypc) and they completed 20 of 33 passes for 134 yards.  The Panthers still have some things to work on offensively before September rolls around but it was nice to see Delhomme throwing the rock around.

Cornerback Ricardo Colclough and safety Nate Salley led the way for the Panthers with six tackles apiece last night.  CB Richard Marshall only had 1 tackle but he made the biggest play on defense last night as he intercepted a shovel pass from Eagles’ punter Sav Rocco on a fake field goal and he returned it 78 yards for a TD.  The defensive numbers look a lot worse than how the defense played as a bunch of players who will be cut played in the 4th quarter when the Panthers allowed 24 points.  The defense shut out the Eagles real players in the first three quarters of last night’s game.  The Eagles finished up with 139 yards rushing on 22 carries (6.3 ypc) and they also completed 25 of 52 passes for 247 yards.

Carolina Panthers 23, Indianapolis Colts 20 in OT

The Panthers prevailed on Saturday Night when John Kasay connected on a 46-yard field goal in overtime.  The Panthers unleashed a dominating running attack on the poor Colts’ defense over the weekend.  They kept the passing game pretty conservative in the first preseason game but it was still effective.  Jake Delhomme played the first two series of the game but he only threw 1 pass and it was incomplete.  Matt Moore followed Delhomme in the game and he was effective completing 7 of 14 passes for 107 yards.  Brett Basanez also had a decent game except for the fact that he threw an interception.  Basanez completed 7 of 9 passes for 54 yards with 1 interception on Saturday.  Lester Ricard also had a decent game as he is likely fighting Basanez for one roster spot.  Decori Birmingham was a workhorse for the Panthers on Saturday Night as he led the team in rushing yards with 70 in 17 carries (4.1 ypc).  DeAngelo Williams was electric on Saturday Night as he rushed for 55 yards on 9 carries (6.1 ypc).  He also scored 2 TDs rushing on carries of 1 and 10 yards.  LaBrandon Toefield had a solid debut for the Panthers with 49 yards rushing on 12 carries (4.1 ypc).  Nick Goings pitched in with 27 yards rushing on 7 carries (3.9 ypc).  2nd year WR Dwayne Jarrett led the way in the passing game for the Panthers with 3 grabs for 43 yards (14.3 avg).  It was nice to see him starting to wake up.  The Panthers finished up with 207 yards rushing on 48 carries (4.3 ypc) on Saturday Night.  The Panthers also completed 20 of 36 passes for 236 yards against the Colts.  The Panthers held onto the football for 43:12 compared to the Colts 27:55 and that is a great sign for the offense.

Rookie linebacker Dan Conner led the way for the Panthers against the Colts with 6 tackles.  DE Julius Peppers played like a man possessed as he only made 1 tackle but he also had a sack and recovered a fumble.  The Panthers did give up a lot of yards to the Colts so they have some things to work on.  The Colts rushed for 97 yards on 18 carries (5.4 ypc) on Saturday.  They also completed 29 of 51 passes for 268 yards against the Panthers.  Still, this was a good first game for the Panthers.

Pittsburgh Steelers 19, Carolina Panthers 3

The Panthers wasted a good defensive effort with some awful offense.  David Carr was the first QB in and he completed 8 of 12 passes for 85 yards with 1 interception.  Dalton Bell finished up the game at QB and he completed 9 of 17 passes for 117 yards with 1 interception.  Nick Goings (8 car, 32 yards), Alex Haynes (8 car, 29 yards) and DeAngelo Williams (4 car, 17 yards) did the bulk of the running for the Panthers.  Rookie WR Dwayne Jarrett only caught 1 pass but it was a 46-yarder.  WR Chris Horn had a solid game as he caught 5 passes for 43 yards (8.6 avg).  The Panthers finished up with 87 yards rushing on 27 carries (3.2 ypc) and they also completed 17 of 29 passes for 202 yards.

The Panthers defense was outstanding holding the Steelers to 118 yards rushing on 39 carries (3.0 ypc) and the Steelers only completed 7 of 16 passes for 23 yards.

New England Patriots 24, Carolina Panthers 7

The Panthers looked pretty awful on Friday Night against the Patriots.  Jake Delhomme completed 11 of 18 passes for 162 yards with 1 TD pass.  David Carr completed 8 of 11 passes for 58 yards and an interception.  DeAngelo Williams led the way in the running game with 29 yards on 9 carries (3.2 ypc).  Drew Carter (3 rec, 52 yards) and Keary Colbert (1 rec, 48 yards, TD) both added spice to the passing game.  The Panthers finished up with 57 yards on 18 carries (3.2 ypc) and they completed 22 of 36 passes for 222 yards.

The Panthers defense did not play too well as the Patriots rushed for 148 yards on 36 carries (4.1 ypc) and they also completed 22 of 33 passes for 236 yards.
