The Carolina Panthers picked OG Amini Silatolu with the #40 overall pick (2nd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Silatolu is an old school bruiser as he takes the fight to the defense. He is a mauler in the running game and he’s also a decent pass protector. Silatolu is 6’3″, 312 pounds and he is just plain nasty. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to the gigantic step up in competition in 2012. He played in 10 games (all starts) at tiny Midwestern State last year. He played in 19 games (all starts) in his two years at Midwestern State and he played in 41 games (all starts) in his four years in college overall at Midwestern State and tinier San Joaquin Delta College (California). This is a boom or bust pick, but I like it for the Panthers.

Kuechly played in 12 games (all starts) for Boston College last year and he had 191 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, he broke up 3 passes and he had 3 interceptions. He played in 38 games (37 starts) in his three years with Boston College and he had 532 tackles, 35.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, 10 passes broken up and 7 interceptions. Kuechly is a tackling machine and he will be playing in the middle of the Panthers’ D from Day #1. I love this pick for the Panthers.

QB Steve Beuerlein played his best football of his career with the Panthers. In 1999, Beuerlein made it to the only Pro Bowl of his long NFL career. He played in 16 games (all starts) for the Panthers in 1999 and he completed 343 of 571 passes (60.1%) for 4,436 yards with 36 TD passes and 15 INTs (94.6 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 27 times for 124 yards (4.6 ypc) with 2 TD runs that year. Beuerlein played in 59 games (51 starts) in his five years with the Panthers and he completed 1,041 of 1,723 passes (60.4%) for 12,690 yards with 86 TD passes and 50 INTs (87.7 QB Rating). He also carried the ball 109 times for 305 yards (2.8 ypc) with 3 TD runs in his career with the Panthers. Beuerlein was only 23-28 (45.1%) as a starting QB for the Panthers, but it’s hard to blame him for that record. He is #2 in passing yards (12,690) and passing TDs (86) in Panthers’ history.

The Panthers are just tinkering with the roster a little bit since free agency opened up. The have re-signed six of their own guys, signed five free agents and they have dealt for an offensive lineman so far this off-season. Here a look at the guys coming to town in 2012:

Offensively: The Panthers shocked the NFL world by signing RB/FB Mike Tolbert, despite already having DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart at RB. This logjam could lead to a trade on draft day. The Panthers have signed G/C Mike Pollak and they dealt RB Mike Goodson to the Raiders for G/T Bruce Campbell, so they have upgraded a little bit on the O-Line. The Panthers have also re-signed FB/TE Richie Brockell.

Defensively: The Panthers have re-signed four backup type linebackers in Jordan Senn, Antwan Applewhite, Kenny Onatolu and Jason Phillips. They also have brought back CB R.J. Stanford. On the open market, the Panthers have signed safeties Reggie Smith and Haruki Nakamura.

Special Teams: The Panthers have signed kicker Justin Medlock to challenge Olindo Mare in training camp.

GRADE FOR THE OFF-SEASON SO FAR: C
